In 1991, a book by William Strauss and Neil Howe called "Generations" was published. In it, the authors identified four generations that are most socially active at the moment: Baby Boomers (born during the birth rate boom after World War II from 1946 to 1964), generation X (1965 - 1980), millennials/generation Y (1981 - 1996), zoomers/generation Z (1997 - 2012). Strauss and Howe note that people born in the same time period have similar values and behaviors, as they grew up under the influence of the same historical events.
